Pressemitteilung: Finale des Heinz Kettler Deutschland Cups in Belgien

For the first time, the final of this regatta series will be held abroad · 19 and 20 September at the Royal Yacht Club Warche, Bütgenbach · The Belgian hosts are vying for a place on the podium · Official opening on Friday, 18 September

Bütgenbach/Hoyerswerda, 16 September 2026. Now in its fourth season, Germany’s only national inclusive regatta series is making its first stop abroad: on 19 and 20 September, the Royal Yacht Club Warche in Bütgenbach will host the final of the 2026 Heinz Kettler Germany Cup. People with and without disabilities will be sailing in the same boats, under the same rules and competing for the same placings – and for the title, which remains undecided after two out of three race days. A total of 20 different crews from four nations have taken part in the 2026 Heinz Kettler Germany Cup this season.

The current standings: Norway leads, three teams battle for the podium

After two race days, the SALTO SAILING Team Norway, with skipper Stian Kristiansen (Moss Seilforening) and Elliot Finnestrand (Kongelig Norsk Seilforening), is in the lead: second place in Hamburg, victory on the second race day as part of the SailGP in Sassnitz, three points. Four points behind them is Team “Die Zwei”, with skipper Jürgen Brietzke (Wir sind Wir Inclusion in Sailing e.V.) and Siggi Mainka, Paralympic gold medallist at Beijing 2008 – the winners of the season opener on the Alster, who are unfortunately unable to compete in Belgium for health reasons. In third place is the hosts’ BLAG Sailing Team, with skipper Alexandre Grosjean and Benoît Lumay, followed by Team Alster HSC from the Hamburg Sailing Club, with skipper Dirk Thalheim and Stephanie Brix, and Team WindSpiel.

Scoring is based on the low-point system: the daily placings from the three match days are added together – the team with the fewest points overall wins; in the event of a tie, the best individual result counts. The Norwegians are therefore the clear favourites for the title. The battle for second and third place is tight – and the hosts from the Royal Yacht Club Warche have the chance to secure a place on the podium in their home race.

Overall standings after two of three race days (as at 2 September 2026):

“The great thing about the Heinz Kettler Cup is the opportunity to compete in lots of races, provided the wind conditions are on our side. Given the high standard of competition, I wouldn’t know where else you could sail the RS Venture so much. We’re also noticing that the other competitors are getting better and better, and the races are becoming closer. And we mustn’t forget the organisers, who ensure that everything runs smoothly and are always ready to lend a hand. You deliver to a remarkably high standard, which makes the Heinz Kettler Cup a must-attend event for Team Salto every season.”

– SALTO SAILING Team Norway, Stian Kristiansen and Elliot Finnestrand

Who’s sailing in Bütgenbach

The field demonstrates what inclusive regatta sport means: Dirk Thalheim and Stephanie Brix from Team Alster HSC finished third at the 2026 Para European Championships – in Bütgenbach, they’ll be competing for the Hamburg Sailing Club.

Sophia is also part of the field. The ten-year-old is visually impaired and had her first sailing lesson in May 2025 – with Susann Beucke, Olympic silver medallist at the Tokyo Games. She has been training regularly for just over a year – now as part of the Heinz Kettler Inclusive Youth Sailing Team Germany: at least one session a week on Hamburg’s Außenalster, plus several training weekends. She has discovered a great passion for sailing and this season is competing in races ranging from the Helga Cup and the Heinz Kettler Germany Cup to Sassnitz – in regular regattas, side by side with experienced sailors, rather than in a separate children’s category.

A debut in Belgium – and one goal: Europe

The Royal Yacht Club Warche is situated on Lake Bütgenbach in eastern Belgium, just around twelve kilometres from the German-Belgian border. Its BLAG Sailing Team has competed on both match days so far, finishing in the top five in both Hamburg and Sassnitz – and now the club is hosting the final. For the series, crossing the border is more than just a change of venue: it sees itself as a platform for inclusive regatta sailing in Europe, and the organisers aim to expand its European reach in the coming years.

“We want to promote inclusive sailing beyond national borders and show that it is a sport open to everyone. Inclusion is the foundation of a society in which everyone is respected.”

– Alexandre Grosjean, member of the Royal Yacht Club Warche

Programme

The final will be officially opened on the evening of Friday 18 September. On Saturday 19 September, the regatta day will begin at around 9.00 am with the skippers’ briefing; the races are scheduled from 10.30 am to 6.00 pm. On Sunday 20 September, sailing will commence at around 9.30 am; the prize-giving ceremony for the third day of racing and the 2026 overall standings is scheduled for 4.30 pm. Times are subject to change depending on the weather and decisions by the race committee.

Venue: Royal Yacht Club Warche, Worriken 2c, B-4750 Bütgenbach

“With the final in Belgium – our first international venue – we are taking the event a step further beyond Germany. In future, we intend to gradually strengthen our international focus to give inclusive sailing and the Heinz Kettler Cup even greater visibility.”

– Andreas Sand, Chairman of the Heinz Kettler Foundation

The 2026 season in figures

Two race days have been completed:

the season opener on 14 and 15 May on Hamburg’s Außenalster at the Hamburg Sailing Club, featuring 16 crews and 24 races, with “Die Zwei” as the winners – and the second round from 18 to 20 August as part of SailGP in Sassnitz, featuring 15 crews and 32 races, with SALTO SAILING Team Norway as the winners. Twenty teams from Belgium, Germany, Norway and the Czech Republic are in the overall standings.

Partners and sponsors

The series is named after and primarily sponsored by the Heinz Kettler Foundation. The founders and initiators are the Möhnesee Yacht Club, the Heinz Kettler Foundation and Wir sind Wir Inclusion in Sailing e.V. The first round was organised by the Hamburg Sailing Club, whilst the final is being organised by the Royal Yacht Club Warche. The first round in Hamburg was supported by Hamburg Active City, whilst the second round, held as part of the SailGP in Sassnitz, was supported by the Germany SailGP Team presented by Deutsche Bank, the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and many other sponsors. Wir sind Wir Inclusion in Sailing e.V. is a Purpose Partner of the Germany SailGP Team. The final in Bütgenbach is being held as part of the ‘People to People’ Small Project Fund under the Interreg Meuse-Rhine programme (NL-BE-DE) and is funded by the European Union.

About the Heinz Kettler Germany Cup

The Heinz Kettler Germany Cup is Germany’s first and only national inclusive regatta series. First held in 2023, the series will enter its fourth season in 2026.

There are no separate classes: sailors with and without disabilities form mixed crews. The organiser provides the RS Venture Connect class boats – adjustable seats, joystick controls and a self-righting hull make them adaptable to different disabilities, and no team needs to own or transport their own boat. Since para-sailing was removed from the Paralympic programme following the 2016 Paralympic Games in Rio, the series has created a standalone platform for ambitious, inclusive regatta racing. In 2025, an inclusive regatta was held for the first time as part of SailGP in Sassnitz; in the same year, the Heinz Kettler Inclusive Youth Sailing Team Germany was founded, in which young sailors with and without disabilities are trained together for competitive sailing.

The Heinz Kettler Foundation, established in 1999, puts the principle of inclusion between recreational sport and para-sport into practice and supports projects at regional and national level – without restriction as to sport, age or gender.

Wer segelt in Bütgenbach?

Veranstaltungsort: Royal Yacht Club Warche, Worriken 2c, B-4750 Bütgenbach
