The BAT Sailing Team impressively demonstrates that sailing really is a sport for everyone \u2013 and is thus a pioneer in putting inclusion into practice within the competitive world of regatta sailing.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=mqgZ-zdtD0Q\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h1>\n<p>5 years of the BAT Sailing Team: Heading into our third Bundesliga season<\/p>\n<\/h1>\n<div>\n<p>The BAT Sailing Team \u2013 inclusion in action on the regatta course \u2013 a joint project between the North German Regatta Club and \u2018Wir sind Wir Inclusion in Sailing\u2019, reached a remarkable milestone in 2025: After five thrilling match days in the 2nd German Sailing Bundesliga, the inclusive team secured 10th place in the final, finishing 11th overall out of 18 teams and thus successfully avoiding relegation.<\/p>\n<p>On the fourth match day of the 2025 season at Wannsee, the BAT Sailing Team impressively demonstrated inclusion in action on the regatta course and achieved its best result of the season with a sixth-place finish. With two day victories and placings of 1st, 4th, 3rd, 5th, 1st and 3rd, the team proved its great potential. In addition, the BAT League Team, comprising Mieke Klein, Marvin Hamm, David Koch and Jan Mense, finished as runners-up in the Central German Sailing Clubs Championship \u2013 another impressive achievement.<\/p>\n<p>2026 is a special year: the BAT Sailing Team is celebrating its fifth anniversary. Currently, 18 people with and without disabilities are competing together in regattas \u2013 including people with visual impairments, blind people, wheelchair users and deaf people. In 2026, for the first time, two children and young people with visual impairments will also join the team. The team welcomed and integrated further new members in 2025. Having successfully avoided relegation, the team is heading into its third Bundesliga season in 2026 \u2013<br \/>impressive proof that inclusion in competitive regatta sailing is not only possible but also enriches the sport for everyone. Susann Beucke, the Tokyo Olympic silver medallist in sailing, supports the project as its patron.<\/p>\n<p>The annual team workshop, led by professional team coach Andrea Loth \u2013 who has now been working with the BAT Sailing Team for three years \u2013 provides a valuable foundation for every season. Under the motto \u2018Keep growing\u2019, the team works on structures and goals \u2013 because the vision is clear: #alleanbord. Sailing is one of the most inclusive sports \u2013 on the water, team spirit and communication count, not physical limitations. The BAT Sailing Team wants to demonstrate that what is possible on the regatta course must also be possible in society, business and working life.<\/p>\n<p>As well as its ambitious regatta programme, the BAT Sailing Team is also committed to training: sailing workshops for visually impaired and blind people are organised on a regular basis. For several years now, the popular \u2018Fledermaus\u2019 sailing course has been taking place in cooperation with Rotary Deichtor and the Norddeutscher Regatta Verein. In addition, the team organises an annual taster course in collaboration with the Blinden- und Sehbehindertenverein Hamburg e.V. \u2013 an important bridge for inspiring new people to take up inclusive sailing.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<hr>\n<h1>\n<p><strong>From a sailing workshop for the blind to SailGP<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/h1>\n<div>\n<p>David Koch, a visually impaired physiotherapist, took part in a sailing workshop for the blind in 2020, became a co-founder of the BAT Sailing Team and, in 2025, worked as the official physiotherapist for the SailGP crews in Sassnitz. His inspiring story is a prime example of the doors that inclusive sailing can open.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<hr>\n<h1>\n<h1>Scientific collaboration: International recognition for inclusive sailing initiatives<\/h1>\n<\/h1>\n<div>\n<p>The three-year scientific study of the BAT Sailing Team has been published in the renowned international journal \u201cFrontiers in Sports and Active Living\u201d \u2013 a significant milestone for inclusive sailing in Germany.<\/p>\n<p>The study \u201cSailing together: challenges for an inclusive team of visually impaired and sighted athletes at Kiel Week\u201d documents the development of the BAT Sailing Team from 2021 to 2023. A research team from Humboldt University of Berlin, Leuphana University of L\u00fcneburg and the University of Hamburg, led by Dr Steffen Greve, provided scientific support to the team throughout three Kiel Weeks.<\/p>\n<h2>Key findings of the study<\/h2>\n<p><b>Communication as the key to success: <\/b>Joint communication between sighted and visually impaired athletes has emerged as a particular strength of the team. The newly developed forms of communication not only professionalise inclusive sailing, but are also being applied by the athletes to other areas of sailing.<\/p>\n<p><b>Benefits for all involved: <\/b>Particularly noteworthy is the finding that sighted female sailors, in particular, benefit enormously from the jointly developed forms of communication and find them enriching for their entire sailing practice.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Balance between performance and participation:<\/strong> The team has successfully struck a balance between \u201cparticipation for all\u201d and competitive sailing, thereby setting new standards for ambitious inclusive sport.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrontiers in Sports and Active Living\u201d is an internationally recognised, peer-reviewed open-access journal. Publication means that the work has withstood a rigorous scientific peer-review process and is now visible worldwide. \u201cSailing is one of the most inclusive sports,\u201d confirms the research team. Titus and Sophia were the pioneers of these special programmes, which are specifically designed to train blind and visually impaired children and young people. The BAT Sailing Team sees itself as a role model and driving force for inclusion, and actively works to recruit and train the next generation.<\/p>\n<h3>Titus: From sailing course to Wednesday regatta<\/h3>\n<p>Titus, aged 12, who is visually impaired, has been taking part in a special inclusive sailing course alongside his friend Sander since April 2025. The programme was developed by \u2018Wir sind Wir Inclusion in Sailing\u2019 in cooperation with the Hamburg Sailing Club and is supported by the Hamburg Education Centre for the Visually Impaired and Blind and the Allianz f\u00fcr die Jugend e.V. Nordwest.<\/p>\n<p>Titus\u2019s story highlights the importance of personalised support: following a frustrating experience on a standard sailing course, where no account was taken of his visual impairment, he was given a second chance through this specially adapted training programme. Together with his friend Sander, he trained intensively with coach Calle Sibbert. The aim was to take part in the Hamburg Sailing Club\u2019s Wednesday regatta.<\/p>\n<h3>Sophia: From the Alster to SailGP<\/h3>\n<p>A remarkable success story: 10-year-old Sophia, who is visually impaired, began her sailing course on Hamburg\u2019s Alster in May 2025, supported by Olympic silver medallist Susann Beucke. Her journey took her from her very first sailing lesson all the way to the International German Championships in inclusive sailing at SailGP in Sassnitz, where she competed as the youngest participant.<\/p>\n<p>At the IDM, Sophia and her crew-mate Maren Hahlbrock secured second place with consistent performances. Prior to this, she had already competed as the youngest participant in the Helga Cup \u2013 the world\u2019s largest women\u2019s sailing regatta \u2013 on Hamburg\u2019s Au\u00dfenalster. Her story impressively demonstrates that age sets no limits in inclusive sailing.<\/p>\n<p>During her debut at Kieler Woche, Sophia sailed on the Baltic Sea for the first time. \u201cShe took an immediate liking to sailing at sea. This is a completely new experience for Sophia, who usually sails on the Au\u00dfenalster. The wind direction is much more stable on the Baltic Sea than on the Alster,\u201d reported coach Calle Sibbert.<\/p>\n<p>The initiative had a positive impact beyond the world of water sports: Titus\u2019s parents were so enthusiastic that they launched their own fundraising campaign for the inclusive sailing projects.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<hr>\n<h2>Four pillars of success \u2013<br \/>A systematic approach to inclusion<\/h2>\n<div>\n<p>The formula for success behind \u201cWir sind Wir\u201d was based on four key elements:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/53015140800_6307ac3d07_k.jpg\" alt=\"\"><\/p>\n<h2>\n<h3>1. Providing training and opportunities<\/h3>\n<\/h2>\n<div>\n<p>The \u201cSailing Without Borders\u201d training initiative is a milestone in the promotion of young talent. The programme is complemented by established formats such as the \u201cFledermaus\u201d sailing course run in partnership with Rotary Deichtor (for the past three years), taster courses during Kiel Week, and further sailing workshops for people with varying degrees of visual impairment. The age range of participants extends from young people to those over 80 years old.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2>\n<h3>3. Scientific support<\/h3>\n<\/h2>\n<div>\n<p>The three-year research project conducted by the University of Hamburg, Humboldt University of Berlin and Leuphana University L\u00fcneburg has been published in *Frontiers in Sports and Active Living*. The findings are being used to promote inclusion in other sports. The research project with the University of Hamburg is expected to continue in 2026<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2>\n<h3>2. Visibility through high-level competitive sailing<\/h3>\n<\/h2>\n<div>\n<p>The BAT Sailing Team, as an example of inclusion in action on the regatta course, is attracting media attention: in August 2025, NDR 90.3 broadcast a feature on inclusive sailing at the Hamburg Harbour Concert. The team successfully competes in prestigious regattas such as Kiel Week. This presence demonstrates to the public that inclusive sailing is possible at the very highest level.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2>\n<h3>4. Realising one\u2019s potential in competitive regatta sailing<\/h3>\n<\/h2>\n<div>\n<p>Participation in the 2nd Sailing Bundesliga demonstrates that inclusive teams can also succeed in competitive regatta sailing. The league format is characterised by short, highly intense races, which produce action-packed footage and enjoy a high profile in the sailing media.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<hr>\n<h1>\n<p><strong>Innovative projects: From the Alster to the Baltic Sea<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/h1>\n<div>\n<p>A particular highlight was the pioneering offshore sailing project on the legendary Volvo Ocean Race-winning yacht ILLBRUCK (now \u201cSkenData\u201d) off the coast of Warnem\u00fcnde. During this inclusive offshore sailing experience on 4 June 2025, twelve people with and without disabilities sailed together \u2013 including Paralympic gold medallist Siegmund Mainka and four blind and visually impaired people from Rostock and Hamburg. The project, carried out in cooperation with Speedsailing Rostock and the Rostock Regatta Club, impressively demonstrated that inclusive participation is possible even in the demanding world of offshore sailing.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<hr>\n<h1>\n<h1>Strong partnerships make dreams come true<\/h1>\n<\/h1>\n<div>\n<p>The project\u2019s success is based on a strong network of supporters and established partnerships. The projects on the Alster and the BAT Sailing Team are joint ventures with the Hamburg Sailing Club and the North German Regatta Club, which, as home clubs, provide an indispensable foundation.<\/p>\n<p>The Reinhard Frank Foundation has been a long-standing partner for the past six years, providing the foundation for all the BAT Sailing Team\u2019s projects, training and sailing activities, as well as all sailing projects in the field of sailing for the blind and visually impaired. Other partners, such as the Heinz Kettler Foundation, Torqeedo, Pantaenius, Zhik, Peter Frisch GmbH, Akquinet, ONE, e-Boot Hamburg, Elvstr\u00f6m Deutschland, REWE and Z\u00fcrcher, make it possible for dreams of sailing to become a reality.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/250509_SailingEnergy_DSBLKiel_T1_09785-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"\"><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/Unbenannt-2.png\" alt=\"\"><\/p>\n<hr>\n<h1>\n<h1 style=\"text-align: center;\">A look to the future: 2026 and beyond<\/h1>\n<\/h1>\n<div>\n<p>The BAT Sailing Team is heading into the 2026 season with ambitious goals. The team\u2019s third Bundesliga season is just around the corner, and they plan to continue their inclusive success story. In addition, there will be joint training sessions with the Heinz Kettler Inclusive Youth Sailing Team Germany.<\/p>\n<p>The research collaboration with the University of Hamburg is expected to continue into 2026. This research partnership will help to continuously improve the quality of the work and to document and share the insights gained for the benefit of all inclusive sailing projects.<\/p>\n<p>This extensive programme \u2013 ranging from international championships in Portugal and the European Championships to regattas in Belgium and Copenhagen \u2013 impressively demonstrates that the BAT Sailing Team is no longer merely a German project, but an internationally connected player in inclusive sailing. With two day victories and placings of 1st, 4th, 3rd, 5th, 1st and 3rd, the team proved its great potential. In addition, the BAT League Team, comprising Mieke Klein, Marvin Hamm, David Koch and Jan Mense, finished as runners-up in the Central German Sailing Clubs Championship \u2013 another impressive achievement.<\/p>\n\n\\n\n\n<p>2026 is a special year: the BAT Sailing Team is celebrating its fifth anniversary. Currently, 18 people with and without disabilities are competing together in regattas \u2013 including people with visual impairments, blind people, wheelchair users and deaf people. In 2026, for the first time, two children and young people with visual impairments will also join the team. The team welcomed and integrated further new members in 2025. Having successfully avoided relegation, the team is heading into its third Bundesliga season in 2026 \u2013<br \/>impressive proof that inclusion in competitive regatta sailing is not only possible but also enriches the sport for everyone. Susann Beucke, the Tokyo Olympic silver medallist in sailing, supports the project as its patron.<\/p>\n\n\\n\n\n<p>The annual team workshop, led by professional team coach Andrea Loth \u2013 who has now been working with the BAT Sailing Team for three years \u2013 provides a valuable foundation for every season. Under the motto \u2018Keep growing\u2019, the team works on structures and goals \u2013 because the vision is clear: #alleanbord. Sailing is one of the most inclusive sports \u2013 on the water, team spirit and communication count, not physical limitations. The programme was developed by \u2018Wir sind Wir Inclusion in Sailing\u2019 in cooperation with the Hamburg Sailing Club and is supported by the Hamburg Education Centre for the Visually Impaired and Blind and the Allianz f\u00fcr die Jugend e.V. Nordwest.<\/p>\n\n\\n\n\n<p>Titus\u2019s story highlights the importance of personalised support: following a frustrating experience on a standard sailing course, where no account was taken of his visual impairment, he was given a second chance through this specially adapted training programme. Together with his friend Sander, he trained intensively with coach Calle Sibbert. The aim was to take part in the Hamburg Sailing Club\u2019s Wednesday regatta.<\/p>\n\n\\n\n\n<h3>Sophia: From the Alster to SailGP<\/h3>\n\n\\n\n\n<p>A remarkable success story: 10-year-old Sophia, who is visually impaired, began her sailing course on Hamburg\u2019s Alster in May 2025, supported by Olympic silver medallist Susann Beucke. Her journey took her from her very first sailing lesson all the way to the International German Championships in inclusive sailing at SailGP in Sassnitz, where she competed as the youngest participant.<\/p>\n\n\\n\n\n<p>At the IDM, Sophia and her crew-mate Maren Hahlbrock secured second place with consistent performances. Prior to this, she had already competed as the youngest participant in the Helga Cup \u2013 the world\u2019s largest women\u2019s sailing regatta \u2013 on Hamburg\u2019s Au\u00dfenalster. Her story impressively demonstrates that age sets no limits in inclusive sailing.<\/p>\n\n\\n\n\n<p>During her debut at Kieler Woche, Sophia sailed on the Baltic Sea for the first time. \u201cShe took an immediate liking to sailing at sea. This is a completely new experience for Sophia, who usually sails on the Au\u00dfenalster. Fledermaus \u2013 kann nicht sehen, aber fliegen) entstand Ende 2020 als Idee bei einem Segel-Workshop f\u00fcr blinde und sehbehinderte Personen. Aktuell sind wir 13 aktive Teammitglieder in der Kerncrew. Das Team besteht aus Blinden, Sehbehinderten, einer Geh\u00f6rslosen, H\u00f6renden und Sehenden. Als Team organisieren wir uns selbst. Neben dem Training auf dem Wasser und Bootsarbeiten, bei denen alle mit anpacken, treffen wir uns vor allem auch in der Wintersaison, um uns abzustimmen. Es geht darum anstehende Aufgaben und Organisation zu verteilen damit wir in der nachfolgenden Saison unsere Ziele erreichen k\u00f6nnen. Das Bat Sailing Team ist auch ein Raum f\u00fcr Wachstum und Entwicklung; seglerisch, pers\u00f6nlich und als Gruppe. Unter anderem besch\u00e4ftigen wir uns viel mit der Frage, wie effektive Teamkommunikation funktioniert, wenn der visuelle Input fehlt.
